Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort Reviews & Information

Use the drop down below to find out more information about Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort.

Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort sits like a jewel within the magnificent Quirimbas Archipelago; the Medjumbe Island is on a small private Mozambique island that is only one kilometre long and 500 meters wide. A perfect view of endless white sand and translucent sea mesmerises guests. With just 13 beach chalets, each one a few steps from the ocean, the resort offers real barefoot luxury and complete privacy.

In addition to private beaches, countless coves can be discovered, and pleasant surroundings are waiting to be experienced. The island also caters for numerous activities including diving, fishing and different water sports. The coral reefs surrounding the island in the Quirimbas Archipelago are one of Mozambique's best-kept secrets. The resort is as close as one gets to an earthly paradise, with endless stretches of silver beach reaching down to an aquamarine ocean. Sea, sand and sky merge here in blissful cohesion, while unspoilt beaches, coves and small bays lie waiting to be discovered.

Medjumbe's 13 beach chalets blend into the pristine environment. Each of the beautiful palm-thatched cottages offers air-conditioned luxury and a private plunge pool to refresh in the tropical heat. The beach chalets on the island are the ultimate in sophisticated simplicity, located just steps away from the warm Indian Ocean. Nestling on the white sands, the beach cottages at the resort offer privacy and seclusion, yet are situated conveniently close to the resort's guest areas.

Each chalet is luxuriantly furnished in crisp blues and whites, providing a full en-suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor shower, and is refreshingly air-conditioned. Ceiling fans, mosquito nets, hairdryer, minibar, satellite TV and tea/coffee making facilities are included in every chalet. A hammock outside ensures ultimate relaxation.

Location and access to the island

The island lies at the northernmost reach of the Quirimbas Archipelago in Mozambique. It is a spectacular 48-minute flight away from the mainland Pemba in northern Mozambique. Access to the island is via a scenic light aircraft, operated by CFA Air Charters, the transfer from Pemba Airport - 48 minutes in duration. Pemba, situated on the mainland in northern Mozambique, is accessed from Johannesburg, with direct flights operated by Airlink, as well as from Maputo, Dar es Salaam and Nairobi.

Activities & Diving

The private island offers some of the best diving in the world with magnificent coral reefs and a rich diversity of marine species. An incredible array of fish, ranging from Moray Eels and Stingrays to Barracuda, Kingfish and other pelagic gamefish can be observed here while diving in tropical waters that seldom drop below 26°C. Dolphins are often encountered while Humpback Whales can be sighted between August and October every year. Leatherback, Loggerhead and Green Turtles are commonly seen in the ocean, coming ashore to lay their eggs on the sandy island beaches that are sometimes right in front of the beach chalets.

Fishing

Around the Quirimbas Archipelago in Mozambique, deep water is accessed close to the islands, which means one doesn't have to travel far for exciting encounters with big game fish. Only little explored, the protected waters around the island are home to some of the most exciting game fish to catch - species such as Kingfish, Barracuda, Dorado, Queenfish, Serra, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna and Sailfish can be found here.

Water Sports

The island in Mozambique is a nature lover's paradise, and most of the resort's activities enable guests to delight in the island's natural wonders. The Activities Center provides a range of activities. For guests who enjoy water sports, it is a natural playground. Activities offered include sailing, windsurfing, tubing and water skiing as well as wake and knee boarding. Our Gulf Craft 20' Swan is used for water skiing, tubing and kneeboards also available.

Kayaks are available for guests to explore the crystal clear waters around the Medjumbe island and the reefs around nearby Quissanga Island. Visitors may also take a boat to explore the surrounding marine life, which includes dolphins all year round and whales from August to November. The Quirimbas's marine riches can also be studied by snorkelling around the island's stunning coral reef. Guided and unguided snorkelling is available, with equipment custom-fitted at the Activities Center.
